Insta360X6: Simplicity Forged Over a Decade
PR Newswire
BEIJING, Sept. 29, 2026
BEIJING, Sept. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from China.org.cn on the new ultra-flagship 360-degree camera of Insta360 and the company’s development:
It took Insta360 ten years to turn a 360-degree camera into something that anyone can pick up and use easily.
This August, Insta360 unveiled the X6, its new ultra-flagship 360-degree camera and signature product marking the tenth anniversary of its 360-camera lineup. Beyond upgraded image quality and specs, the device, more importantly, carries forward and deepens the product philosophy of cutting complexity for simplicity. Its new AI Director feature automatically sorts footage, identifies highlight moments and compiles videos while the camera charges, achieving true zero editing. The all-new Gimbal Mode 2.0 not only captures 4K flat-view footage and 8K 360-degree content simultaneously, but also makes handheld footage as steady as professional-grade gear. The 3D Gaussian Splatting function generates navigable spatial scenes with one tap, allowing users to virtually “wander through” moments from the past.
Iteration after iteration brings surprise after surprise, thanks to a philosophy that has run through the company for years: how can professional-grade tech products be made usable by everyone?
Eleven years ago, Liu Jingkang, not long out of university, launched his startup together with a group of business partners in their early twenties by making the most unassuming 360-degree camera accessories. This fledgling team of fresh graduates had no experience, no funding and no mature supply chain. Team members worked on improving product, reached out to media, and sought funding at the same time. At times, they got only three to four hours of sleep a day.
A turning point came in 2016, when the team showed up at the Consumer Electronics Show in the United States with Nano, its first-generation consumer-grade 360-degree camera. Boasting features like plug-and-shoot and direct sharing to social media, the Nano became an instant hit.
At that time, global renowned brands still dominated the consumer electronics industry, and it was far from easy for a Chinese startup to gain a firm foothold in the high-end imaging space. The hardware industry in particular has long R&D cycles and high trial-and-error costs – a single misstep could push a company out of the market.
But Insta360 decided not to follow existing players – instead, it would set its own standards. While others were still competing on specs, Insta360 had realized that the core of the imaging ecosystem is not the device, but people.
“The ideal camera is one you forget you are holding,” said Liu Jingkang. Users don’t need to understand complex hardware or technical parameters. “You simply press the button in a truly vivid moment and enjoy the moment itself.” Insta360 can always quickly detect many unspoken needs of users and updates its products’ features accordingly.
From early doubts over “what can a 360-degree camera even do?” to the company now roughly holding 70 % of the global 360-degree-camera market share, Insta360 has grown step by step from a “follower” into an industry “leader”.
As China’s private economy moves towards high-quality development, a growing number of Chinese tech enterprises like Insta360 are, through continuous innovation and long-term investment, truly bringing once-elusive technologies into ordinary people’s daily lives.
